FAQ

How will I know how many team members to hire for my move?

Whether you're getting a 'full-service' move (team with equipment), or 'labor-only' move (just the team), it is very important to have the right number of team members on hand. For moves that are less involved, only 2 team members may be necessary to get the job done in a timely manner. Where elevators, multiple flights of stairs, 'long-carries', or pianos are involved, you'll need more. Be sure to mention these conditions to your MYGRATE representative, so that he, or she can discuss options with you that will fit your needs.

I'm planning a move. What are my options?

This doesn't have to be a tough call. You have a few options, however, based upon two things: (1), How physically involved you'd like to be, and, (2), your budget, with regard to time, and money. In the end, there are advantages, and disadvantages for each option.

-Move One: Do the entire job, yourself? Bribe, or plead with a few friends; or make new ones. Rent or borrow a truck, then take the day in stride.

-Move Two: You rent the truck, hire a team to help load it, drive it, then help unload it. If you're moving out of state, you may also hire help in your new town. Feeling up to the task?? Consider unloading by yourself.

-Move Three: Hire a moving company to do the entire job, inlcuding the packing, loading, moving, unloading, even unpacking.

Countdown To The Big Day

One month, or more, to go…

*Reserve your truck, today, to get the best rates (see The ‘do-it-yourself’ Mover).

*Decide whether you will go ‘full-service’ (team with equipment), or ‘labor-only’ (just the team), then start making phone calls to get estimates.

*Decide what items will get packed, and shipped to your new home, or what will get donated, or thrown out. It is usually helpful to get rid of those donated, or unwanted items, before you begin packing for your move. You can then gauge what boxes and moving supplies you'll need, and have them shipped to your home.

*Buy boxes and moving supplies, and begin packing.

*This a great time to get pet exams. Be sure to get copies of all their records.

*Contact all utility and service providers, including phone and internet, gas, electric, water, cable, or satellite. Don’t forget magazine, and newspaper subscriptions.

*Consider homeowner’s or renter’s insurance for your new home.

*Alert your local post office of the changes to come, or visit www.usps.com.

Up to 2 weeks to go…

*Get your ‘survival box’, or suitcase, ready. Pack this with toiletries, clothing, passport, credit cards, first-aid kit, remote controls, or any items you might need at hand, before you have a chance to unpack completely. If you're using a packing service, then you will want to have this box in place, marked, and ready to go before they get there.

*Get your car/s tuned up.

Just days to go…

*Confirm with your real estate agent, and moving coordinator, that the move date is on schedule.

*Pick up prescriptions.

*Pick up items in storage.

*If you are selling your home, you will want to set aside a box to pack items that will be left for the new homeowners.

*Pick up dry cleaning.

*Make arrangements for your pets, or babysitting, on move day.

*For moves involving a freight elevator.

*Moving companies are not obligated to remove fixtures, draperies, or any other objects that are nailed, or screwed to the wall. You might have determined that items such as draperies and curtains, will not fit the windows in your new home. Check with your real estate agent to find out if they are excluded from the sale of your old home, and be ready to remove them.
